Jen Roth-Gordon: I will always be grateful to Susan Philips for giving me my first big “break” and choosing me to help carry forward the legacy of linguistic anthropology at the University of Arizona. It was an honor to walk in her unfillable footsteps. Years after her retirement, Susan stayed dedicated to our linguistic anthropology graduate program and the joint Anthropology and Linguistics (ANLI) Ph.D. program she and Jane had created. She was an inspiration and a force, and the field as a whole is in her debt.
